Civil Air Patrol Cadet Leadership Academy Builds Future Leaders
JOINT BASE M-D-L (APR. 27, 2025) – The NJ Wing of Civil Air Patrol recently hosted a highly successful Cadet Leadership Academy, drawing 24 cadets from across the state for one day of leadership development, team-building and hands-on instruction.
Held at the Kish Airman Leadership School, the academy provided a structured environment where cadets advanced their leadership knowledge and skills under the guidance of experienced CAP adult members and cadet staff. Instructors from the Maj Thomas B. McGuire Jr. Composite Squadron played a key role in the program, delivering high-quality instruction and mentorship throughout the event.
“This academy is all about preparing cadets to become effective leaders in their squadrons and beyond,” said Col Amy Myzie, commander, NJ Wing. “The McGuire Composite Squadron was proud to contribute its expertise and support the Wing’s efforts in developing tomorrow’s cadet leaders.”
The Cadet Leadership Academy focused on topics including communications, problem-solving, decision-making and managing peer leadership challenges. Through interactive lessons, group activities, and practical exercises, cadets strengthened their confidence and leadership potential.
Participants also benefited from networking with peers from across the NJ Wing and engaging with adult leaders who shared their experiences in CAP.
“We saw tremendous growth in the participating cadets over the course of the academy,” said 1st Lt Justin Hawkins, commander, McGuire Composite Squadron. “They left motivated and better equipped to take on more responsibility in their home squadrons.”
The Cadet Leadership Academy is one of several leadership opportunities available through Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Program, which supports youth ages 12–18 with training in leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness and character development.
