By: Maj. Bill Petzinger

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST (March 22, 2021) -- Two cadets from Civil Air Patrols Maj Thomas B. McGuire Composite Squadron have accepted appointments to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy. C/2d Lt Maici Mintchwarner and C/CMSgt Christina Orthodoxou, both seniors at Allentown High School (NJ), will be sworn in as members of the Class of 2025 on June 28.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy recognized C/2d Lt Mintchwarner and C/CMSgt Orthodoxou for superior academic achievement and leadership potential as Civil Air Patrol cadets. They will be playing lacrosse for the Coast Guard Academy.

The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut is an accredited college, educating future Coast Guard officers. Admission to the Coast Guard Academy is highly competitive and fewer than 400 appointments are offered annually from a pool of over 2,000 applicants.

Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. CAPs 60,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. In addition, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to over 25,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
